Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" quilt
Due Date: 8/31/2017
Subject: English II

With a partner design five quilt squares that would signify a “secret message” to help someone know how to successfully run away.

Think of the following when considering your quilt square design:

  1. Where would they need to travel? When would they need to travel? How would they know what places/houses were “safe” houses? What tools/items would they need? How would you let them know when to begin packing and when to leave exactly? How would you indicate possible dangers?
  2. Your colors, patterns, stitches (indicated with dashes), and knots (dark circle) can each indicate a separate meaning or message.
  3. Neatly design your quilt squares on construction paper. On the back (in pen NOT marker) write a description with complete sentences of FIVE ways that your quilt squares send a message.

Totem Pole Projects
Due Date: 8/25/2017
Subject: English III

Totem Pole Projects

As the Native Americans carved vertical logs with intricate images to tell stories, you will tell me your story in a totem you create. Each image should be labeled with a caption explaining its significance to you and there should be a short paragraph (Typed, 12pt. Times New Roman, please) on the back (or on a slide, if digital) telling me the story you told with the images.

Creativity counts! Since this totem is a symbol of you, it should accurately represent who you are (how you came to be the person you are). Make this as colorful and creative as you’d like. You’ll have an opportunity to present your totem poles to the class Friday, August 25, 2017.

This project will be scored as a presentation, keep this in mind when you’re preparing your totem and your paragraph.
